Nurturing budding talent and stimulating creativity among the youth within the East African fashion industry.
Once upon a time, fashion design was viewed as a low-calibre career, up until a few years ago. If you went into the fashion design business, people concluded that you were a failure in school and that the only option left was designing. Today, however, Fashion Designers and more specifically African Fashion Designers are positioning themselves as creative and innovative professionals with a well-spring of talent that can serve the domestic, regional and global markets.
A study review of the East Africa region has established that there is a limited number of national and regional institutions that offer practical and refined training in fashion design that is relevant and responsive to the job market.
By investing in a Middle Level College recognized and approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MOHEST) under the Technical, Industrial, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training (TVET), MEFA Institute of Design will provide a career focused education system with training programmes targeting the post-secondary clientele, thus bridging the skills gap between supply and demand of fashion design training not only in Kenya but across the East African region.
Rationale: Why You Should Get Involved
MEFA Institute of Design aims at reviving what is perceived as ‘old’ art by passing down hand skills used in Fashion Design to the youth as a form of economic empowerment. MEFA seeks to empower underprivileged youth from informal settlements starting with Nairobi- Kenya’s capital city.
It is noteworthy that most students that undergo fashion design training are well equipped in the theoretical aspect of training, but lack practical skills, because of inadequate training. This can be attributed to the fact that most of the training programs emphasize fashion design, which attracts the younger population in Kenya and east African region, while overlooking basic skills associated with production technology and processes, equipment maintenance, and multi-skilling where there is a great deal of demand for skilled workers. The use of outdated equipment and / or inadequate amounts of appropriate equipment facilities and infrastructure also contribute to the skills gap.
To address this, MEFA Institute of Design shall capitalize on modern training tools, the use of the latest technology, hands on skill projects and hire highly experienced and well-trained staff to offer training.
The institute will also create a chance for the youth to work on what they are passionate about, develop their untapped skills and talents hence positioning them competitively in the marketplace against their University counterparts.
To achieve this dream, MEFA Institute of Design invites you to sponsor such a youth through a certificate or Diploma Course and empower the youth who will in turn empower their family and society at large. You can also donate towards equipping the institution with up to date equipment to be used in training the students or become a mentor to the students.
